Harriet Stopera


SHERBURNE – Harriet S. Stopera, 90, formerly of Sherburne, passed away Monday, Dec. 4, 2006 at the Bethesda North Hospital of Cincinnati, Ohio, after a short illness.
The daughter of John and Helen (Judycki) Synakowski, Harriet was born in Utica on June 9, 1916. In 1948, Harriet moved to Sherburne, settling on School Street and continuing to reside in Sherburne until September of 1999 when she relocated to Ohio to live with her daughter Lennie. Harriet was a many-year employee of GLA of Norwich, from which she retired. She loved to crochet, and was an excellent cook and baker, with specialties of pies and rolls and Polish dishes such as pierogies.
Harriet is survived by her daughter, Lennie Abbott of West Chester, Ohio, and her son, Stanley Stopera and wife Margie of Norwich; by her sisters, Dorothy Cowan and husband Dave of Holland, Ohio, and Sister M. Medarda of Philadelphia. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Mark Abbott and wife Kristie of Norwich, Andrea Isch of West Chester, Ohio, and Aileen Abbott of St. Louis, Mo.; her great grandchildren: Andy, Samantha, and Allison Isch; Mike and Brooke Abbott; and Mallory and Tucker Norton. Harriet was predeceased by her first husband, John Novak, her second husband, Adam Stopera, and her six brothers: Leo, Ted, John, Louis, Chet, and Ben Synakowski.
A Mass of Resurrection for Harriet will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday from the Church of the Holy Apostle St. Paul’s. Interment will follow in St. Malachy’s Cemetery of Sherburne. Friends are invited to call at the Marion Chapel at St. Paul’s on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the service at 11.
