Lauren Vredenburgh


BAINBRIDGE – Lauren “Larry” Vredenburgh, 75, passed away early Tuesday morning, Dec. 5, 2006, at Otsego Manor, Cooperstown, after a long battle with cancer.
He was born Sept. 11, 1931 in Spruceton (Town of Lexington), son of Clarence and Evelyn (VanValkenburgh) Vredenburg.
After graduating from Hunter-Tannersville Central School in 1949, he served with the U.S. Navy from July, 1950 until receiving honorable discharge in April, 1954. He then attended SUNY Cortland, graduating in 1958, having married Shirley Owens of Cortland in January, 1955. He later married Linda Matteson Jones in May, 1977. Larry taught high school science and coached volleyball at Bainbridge-Guilford Central School from 1958 until his retirement in 1995. While living in Bainbridge area, he pursued many environmental interests, initiating recycling efforts, doing battle with pollution, collecting Gypsy moths, and serving as Director of the Summer Conservation Program at Sherburne for several years. Larry was also an avid hiker, gardener, pinochle and bingo player, working with the Senior Meals program in Bainbridge, visiting residents at Sidney Nursing Home as well as gardening at Chase Nursing Home.
Larry is survived by his children, Sharon (Vredenburgh) Hager of Sidney, William Vredenburgh and his wife Marlene of Masonville, John Vredenburgh of Bennettsville, James Vredenburgh and his wife Mary of Bennettsville, Lisa (Jones) Wynn and fiancé’ Frank Mazzeo of Earlville, Julie (Jones) Ouimet of Unadilla and Patrick Jones and his wife Michelle of Atlanta, Georgia; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Becker of Spruceton and Nadene Willcox of Roseboom along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Linda, in 2002 and his son, Steven Keith Vredenburgh, in 1972.
Friends may call Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The family will be in attendance. Service in celebration of Lauren’s life will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Bainbridge.
