Virginia Wiest


DELMAR – Virginia May (Schuster) Wiest, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011peacefully in her sleep after a long illness.
Born in 1935 in Mt. Hope to Richard and Margaret (Skinner) Schuster, she moved to Afton as a child, and graduated with the Afton class of 1953. Ginny, as her friends knew her best, received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, specializing in Public Health.
Ginny returned to New York where she married John C. Wiest Jr. of Walden, who preceded her in death in 1991. In addition to nursing, she worked the family farm with John and his parents while raising four sons and leading a 4-H group for many years.
A 25-year survivor of breast cancer, she was an avid gardener, loving all types of indoor and outdoor plants. Her favorites were Geraniums, Orchids and Cacti. She loved reading, baking, sewing, stained glass, ceramics, and many other arts and crafts.
In her later years she kept a home in Oxford and in Zephyrhills, Fla., leaving many friends missing her when she fell ill.
She is survived by her sister Marlene Rosenkranz of Deposit; four sons, Edward (Wendy) Wiest and their children Luis, Manny and Jasmine of Slingerlands, Richard Wiest of Guilford, James Wiest of Walden and Kenneth (Blanche) Wiest and their daughter Jenniferlynn of Guilford.
Services will be held privately with her family.
In lieu of flowers, people are asked to make a donation to The Community Hospice Foundation, 295 Valley View Blvd, Rensselaer, NY 12144.
