Marka Welsh


OXFORD – Marka A. Welsh, longtime Oxford resident, passed away on August 8, 2011 at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich, after a brief hospitalization.
Marka was born on June 21, 1930, to George and Katherine Cornwall of Alexandria Bay. Marka graduated from Alexandria Bay Central High School and Cortland State Teachers College, where she was a member of Arethusa Sorority, Sigma Gamma Phi. Marka taught elementary school in Oxford and Guilford, before teaching in Greene for 34 years until her retirement in 1991. Marka was a member of the Fort Hill Post 376 of the America Legion Auxiliary, a volunteer for RSVP, and a fervent supporter of the Oxford Academy sports program, both during and after her children attended school and played sports there.
Marka was married to Leon (Pivot) Welsh on Aug. 25, 1952 until his death in 1999. She is survived by her children, Karen and Greg Lobdell, Cecile Welsh, Bruce and Cynthia Welsh, Terry Welsh and Donna D’Amico, Mark Welsh, Teresa Welsh and Lee Allen, Evangeline and Tom Hart; her grandchildren, Alicia Lobdell and Jamel Champen, Courtney and Donovan Welsh, Kayla and Jaclyn Hart, Mackenzie, Scott, and Rebecca Welsh; her great-grandchildren, Lynnea and Jayda Lobdell; and by in-laws, nieces, and nephews.  
She was predeceased by her husband, Leon Welsh, and her sister, Una Parker.

A Memorial Mass will be held at the Church of St. Bartholomew in Norwich on Friday at 10:30 a.m.
