Alvin Thompson


OXFORD – Alvin U. Thompson, 88, formerly of Onondaga Hill, passed away Friday, May 13, 2011 at the New York State Veterans’ Home in Oxford.
Born and raised in Pharsalia, he lived in Oxford for 18 years, Norwich for 40 years, and Marcellus for four years before moving to Onondaga Hill in 2006.
An Army veteran of World War II, Alvin served with Company C, 47th Infantry in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre. He retired in 1990 as vice president of Ellinwood Auto Parts in Norwich after 45 years. He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2782 and American Legion, both in Norwich. He enjoyed square dancing and was a member of The Broken Squares of Norwich.
Alvin was predeceased by his brother, John; and sisters, Ella Peabody and Gertrude Jaquay.
Surviving are his loving wife of 69 years, the former Viola Crandall; son, Donald (Judith) Thompson of Skaneateles; daughters, Judy (Thomas) Turton of Syracuse and Jeannine (David) Wysokowski of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Donald (Carissa) Thompson Jr. of Marcellus, Stephen (Melissa) Thompson of Skaneateles, Jennifer (Michael) Ginley of Greenfield Center, Thomas (Laurie) Turton III of Liverpool, and Daniel (Rebecca) Turton of Fairmount; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends may call Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 303 Kasson Rd., Camillus. Services will follow at 3 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are by the Buranich Funeral Home, Camillus.
Alvin will be laid to rest Thursday at 11 a.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery, Norwich.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alvin’s memory may be made to Immanuel United Methodist Church. 303 Kasson Rd., Camillus, NY 13031.
