George Sabines

OXFORD – George E. Sabines, 81, of Oxford, passed away Tuesday evening, May 3, 2011, at his home.
The son of Edwin and Gladys Wayman Sabin, George was born on Nov. 29, 1929 in Syracuse. He attended school in Windsor, and had been an Oxford resident for the past 55 years.
A hard worker, George was employed for 20 years by D.W. Bartle of Oxford to deliver coal and fuel oil. He also worked for 32 years operating his own logging business. George never forgot a face, and always had a story to tell. A more than good mechanic, he enjoyed his hobby of tinkering in his garage, where he often proved he could fix anything. He was a good friend to all who knew him, and left a lasting impression on the many lives he touched during his years. He and wife Evelyn M. Ray Sabines, were married in Pennsylvania in 1960.
George is survived by his wife, Evelyn Sabines of Oxford; his children: Terry Sabines and companion Michele Gedling of Oxford, Tom Tierney and companion Terry of Smithville Flats, James Sabines of Oxford, Duane Sabines and companion Kathy Sanders of McDonough, William “Bill” Sabines and wife Barbara of Oxford; 16 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. George was predeceased by his daughter, Viola Marie “Squirt” Sabins; his sisters, Ruth “Midge” Tierney and Jessie Jean Hollings; and brothers John and Ted Sabin.
Funeral services for George will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ralph Hinman of Norwich presiding. Interment will follow in the J.D. Lewis Cemetery of Preston. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.
