Gene Lathrop


 SHERBURNE – C. Eugene “Gene” Lathrop, 89, of Chapel St., passed away Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 at the Community Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, Hamilton.
He was born March 11, 1921 in the Town of Sherburne, a son of Charles A. and Lulu Palmer Lathrop. He was a graduate of Sherburne High School in 1940 and attended Morrisville Ag & Tech College.  On March 12, 1955, he married Gertrude A. Pike in Reno, Nev. Mr. Lathrop was a dairy farmer who owned and operated Westover Farm in Sherburne until his retirement. He was also an artificial breeding technician and sold DeKalb seed and farm supplies.
Gene was a member of the United Church of Christ in Sherburne. He was also a member of the Future Farmers of America, the Holstein Assoc., the New England Milking Shorthorn Assoc., Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Farm Bureau, the Dairymens League, the Grange, DHIA, MSH Assoc., the Poultry Assoc. and the 4-H Band.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Gertrude; his children, Paul Lathrop of Cobleskill; Barry and Paula Lathrop of Sherburne; Dale and Wendy Lathrop of Westborough, Mass.; Theresa Lathrop of Coral Springs, Fla.; Peter and Brenda Lathrop of Sherburne, Richard and Sue Lathrop, of Earlville; Betsy and Don Campbell of Sherburne; 18 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Royce.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday from the United Church of Christ, Sherburne.
Interment in West Hill Cemetery will be in the spring.
Friends are invited to call at the church on Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service.
