Doris Barrows

NORWICH – Doris E. Barrows, 96, long-time resident of Norwich, passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 11, 2011, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in Sherburne in October of 1914, Doris was a daughter of Damon and Bernice Barr Cook. She and her husband, Asa Barrows, were married on Oct. 24, 1937, in the family home in Sherburne. They made their home for a time in King Settlement and were long-time residents of the Polkville area. It was one of their joys to go camping around the area, in the Adirondacks, and especially at the camp they built in Canada. Doris was by nature a very devoted wife, mother, grandma, and great grandma. The aroma of freshly baked goods was ever present in her home, and she enjoyed her gardens.
Doris is survived by her daughters and their spouses: Dawn and Philip Jensen of Delhi, Bonnie and Robert Foote of Norwich, and Joanne and Robert Lee of Oxford; by her grandchildren and their spouses: Scott and Eleanor Jensen of Hobart, Christopher and Daphne Jensen of Carmel, Ind., Jennifer and Jeff Graham of Hope Mills, N.C.; Jason Lee of Oxford, Katherine Lee of Casanova, Va., and John Lee of Oxford. Also surviving are Doris’ great grandchildren: Kevin, David, Abby, and Brandon Jensen, Kelly and Carson Graham; her sister, Julia Cook of Johnson City, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Asa, on Jan. 21, 1983; and by her sisters and brother, Gladys Brewer, Carrie Salisbury, and Fred Cook.
Funeral services for Doris will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. John Martin, pastor of the Oxford United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral home on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.
Please consider memorial contributions to either the Alzheimer’s Association, 140 County HWY 33W, Suite 2, Cooperstown, NY 13326; or to the American Cancer Society, 13 Beech St., Johnson City, NY 13790.
