Francis Murphy


SCHUYLERVILLE – Francis G. Murphy of Hobe Sound, Fla., and formerly of Schuylerville, died peacefully on Jan. 6, 2011.
Born in Cooperstown on Oct. 4, 1920, Francis was the son of Fannie (Foote) and William Murphy.
Francis was employed by Agway, Inc, Schuylerville Central School, and Saratoga Raceway. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Schuylerville Lions Club, American Legion Post #278 in Schuylerville, New York, and VFW Post 10132 in Hobe Sound, Fla.
Francis graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam in 1938. In 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served until 1946. While in the U.S. Marine Corps he fought on Guadalcanal where he earned several medals of distinction.
Francis was predeceased by his wife Mary, who died in 2008; his parents, his sister Helen of Lawton, Oklahoma, his brother Robert of Amsterdam, and a grandson, Ryan Patrick Murphy in 1987.
Survivors include his five children and their families: Joan Root of Schuylerville; Mary Jane Stillman (Jeffrey) of Hobe Sound, Fla., and Norwich; Patrick Murphy of Tallahassee, Fla.; Francis Murphy (Casey) of Cocoa, Fla., and Casey Rosen (David) of Gansevoort. He is also survived by one brother, William Murphy of Amsterdam; 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Donations in Francis’s name may be made to the Saratoga National Cemetery Honor Guard Association (SNCHGA), 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, New York, 12871.
A spring burial is planned at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
Local arrangements are under the direction of Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville.
