Roy “butch” Baker

BARNEVELD – Roy “Butch” Baker, 61, of Barneveld, was taken from his family unexpectedly on Dec. 18, 2010 in a tragic vehicular accident. Born Aug. 3, 1949 and raised in Beaver Meadow, a son of the late Horace Baker and Emily Coleman Baker, he was a graduate of the Otselic Valley Central Schools.
He is survived by two daughters, Amanda Baker of Sherburne and Debra Baker Bello and husband Dan of South Otselic. Roy was looking forward to being “Poppy” to his soon to be born grandson, Dalton Jacob Bello. Butch is also survived by his companion Gwen Cassel of Barneveld and his ex-wife Helen McKissick Baker of Deruyter. He will be missed by his brother William “Bill” Baker now of Morrisville, and by his sister Kathy Thompson of Michigan. He was predeceased by a sister Bernice when a child, a brother Robert as a young adult  and recently a sister, Virginia Stith (83) of Georgetown and of Florida.
Roy was well known by farmers, veterinarians and within the livestock industry in Chenango and surrounding counties for his work with dairy cattle. He was respected for his skill of dehorning, clipping and when hauling cattle with his brother Bill. He worked for many years at Woods Auction Service, Cincinnatus, and was an excellent milker and herd manager at several dairy farms for over 40 years.
In 2004, Butch and Gwen relocated to north of Utica to be co-managers at the Partridge Hill Farm, Barneveld. They cared for over 300 sheep, raising lamb for specialty restaurants in New York City and for freezer customers, and also raised grassfed freezer beef from Belted Galloway cattle. He and Gwen  enjoyed training and using working Border Collies on the farm to make their workload easier. Butch was well known and loved by neighbors and friends in this new area due to his willingness to help with any request, or to extend a wave or an exchange words of wisdom with those who came by the farm.
He leaves behind an extended family of nieces and nephews and many great nieces and great nephews. He will be greatly missed by all his friends and family. No one will ever forget his famous beard and his taciturn but insightful silence – still waters do run deep.
Dad, Poppy, Butch, Roy, we will love and miss you forever!
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The Bible, Romans 8:38-39
A memorial service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.
