SHERBURNE – John J. Moryl, 75, of School St., Sherburne, passed away Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Syracuse.
John was born in Sherburne on April 1, 1935, the son of John and Eva M. McLaughlin Moryl. Nicknamed “Doogie Muggins” as a toddler by his Grandmother McLaughlin, he was still known by many life-long friends as “Doogie.” He and his wife, Mary, with the help of family and friends, built their home on School Street next door to the family home where he was born. John worked for his uncle James W. McLaughlin hauling and delivering coal and doing light construction. There wasn’t a piece of machinery that he couldn’t master with a little practice. He worked for his father-in-law at Curns & Sons Lumber Co., apprenticed in the machine shop with the late George Lathrop, and mostly enjoyed his many years as a truck driver getting to see the country. He drove for Bundy Concrete Company in Sherburne hauling pre-cast concrete tile to the St. Lawrence Seaway Project in Messina. He drove for McBride Milk Haulers in Oneida, Sherburne Rendering and Standard Brands, both in Sherburne, and VanBuiten in Oxford. He later worked for the Village of Sherburne Electric Department and retired from the Village of Sherburne D.P.W.
John was the last surviving member of the original Sherburne Emergency Squad and a member of the Sherburne Fire Department for many years. His hobbies were many. He could take “nothing” and make “something” from it. He “tinkered” with small and antique engines and was a member of the local Antique Engine Association. Most recently, his greatest pleasures came from spending time with his granddaughter and great-grandchildren, as well as rebuilding antique tractors.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary (Curns) Moryl; daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Michael Seymour of Sherburne; granddaughter and her husband, Tammie (Jones) and Christopher Carpenter of Sherburne; great-grandchildren, Dalton and Kelsey Carpenter of Sherburne; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Annette Moryl of Norwich; sisters-in-law, Stella Hubbell of Agawam, Mass. and Margaret “Polly” Curns of Smyrna; and many nieces and nephews.
In keeping with John’s wishes, there will be no services or calling hours. Burial in Willcox Cemetery, Smyrna will be private.
