Mary Davern


SOUTH PLYMOUTH – Mary Jean Davern, 82, of South Plymouth, passed away Friday evening, Dec. 10, 2010 at the Gilmour Health Care Facility where she has made her home for the past eight years.
Mary was born in Oxford in May of 1928 the daughter of Floyd and Bessie (Bush) Barrows. She grew up on the family farm in McDonough and attended school both in McDonough and Oxford. Once out of school she went right to work for the Ribbon Mill in Norwich for a few years before returning home to help the family. She later gained employment with the Norwich Shoe Co. where she worked for a period 14 years. Mary and her husband had also made their home in New Berlin for over 28 years where they owned and operated a farm. She enjoyed working the farm with her husband and especially liked working with and tending to the animals. Her quiet moments were spent walking the hills of the farm with her dogs. Mary had also worked for 14 years at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin in the dietary dept. from which she retired.
On July 16, 1960 in East Guilford, she married Martin Davern and had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Mary is survived by her husband Martin of South Plymouth, her daughter and son-in-law Cathy and Frank Rivenburgh of Hudson, her grandchildren Cindy and Matthew along with several great grandchildren. Also surviving is her brother and sister-in-law Derwin and Josephine Barrows of Bainbridge and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mary will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Douglas Horne, Chaplain of the Gilmour Health Care Facility, will officiate. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m.
