SOUTH NEW BERLIN – Gertrude W. Church, 100 years, passed away Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, in the Chase Memorial Nursing Home of New Berlin.
A long-time South New Berlin resident, Gertrude was born in the Town of Butternuts late in December of 1909. She was the daughter of Robert C. and Mattie Wells Church. A well-educated woman, Gertrude graduated from the South New Berlin school in 1926, earned her BA Degree from Oneonta College, and a Masters Degree from State University College at Oneonta. In addition to that, she completed many courses of study at State University at Albany. During her years, she taught in area schools. Gertrude was known for her love of reading and study, and of genealogy. She lived with her sister, Helen Dull, for many years near White Store, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in South New Berlin.
Gertrude is survived by her nieces, Dyanne Church Vilardi, Dawn Gage, and Denise Connor; and by her nephews, Richard and Robert Church. She was predeceased by her sister, Helen Dull; her brothers, Howard, James, and Walter Church; and her nephew, David Ralph Connor.
A memorial service for Gertrude will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Barry Davis, pastor of the South New Berlin Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery of South New Berlin. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday from 9 a.m. until the service at 10.
