Elizabeth Powell


NORWICH – Elizabeth “Betty” Powell, 87, long-time Norwich resident, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, Nov. 30, 2010, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
Born in Auburn in August of 1923, Betty was the daughter of Harry and Edna Corwin Turnbull. She worked for a time in the concession stand at Smalley’s Theatre in Norwich, and later was employed by McLaughlin’s Department Store. In December of 1944, in Norwich, Betty married Richard Powell, who passed away on April 16, 2001.
Betty is survived by her son, Robert Powell and his wife Maria “Tita” of Leesburg, Va.; her grandchildren and their spouses: Nancy and Christopher Guinn of Fredericksburg, Va., Maria and Jeffrey Stitzel of Fort Benning, Ga., Anna and Brian Blakebrough of Ashburn, Va. and by her great grandchildren: Miranda, Matthew and Justin Stitzel, Tyler, Maria and Buster Blakebrough and Alivia Guinn. Also surviving are Betty’s sisters: Marie Wood of Bradenton, Fla., Ella Mitchell of Unadilla, Florence Matteson and husband Clyde of Springfield Center, and Susan Turnbull of Hope Mills, N.C. and her brothers, Harry Turnbull and wife Mary Lou of Deltona, Fla., William Turnbull and wife Pat of Grimsley, Tenn. and Robert Turnbull and wife Sally of Hollister, Mo. Betty was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn Shadel.
Funeral services for Betty will be held at 7 p.m. Friday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeff Hale, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be at Mt. hope Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
