Lee Scanlan


PITCHER – Lee “Grumpy” V.V. Scanlan, 72, of Pitcher, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, as a result of a motor vehicle accident in Milan, Ohio.
Mr. Scanlan was born in Stamford, Conn. on July 9, 1938, a son of John “Jack” and Priscilla VanVleet Scanlan. A longtime resident of the area, he was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard having served from 1957 to 1963. He retired as a corrections officer, at the rank of lieutenant, after working 26 years for the NYS Department of Corrections.  He also served as a former Deputy for the Chenango County Sheriff’s Department, and Town Constable and Justice of the Peace for the Town of Otselic. He was a member and past chief of the South Otselic Fire Department. Mr. Scanlan had many jobs throughout his life including owner/operator of Lee Scanlan’s Towing, doing auto repair, driving milk truck, school bus, and fuel truck, and working for the Town of Otselic Highway Department. In his spare time, he enjoyed motorcycle riding, camping, and taking trips with his grandchildren. A loving father, husband, and grandfather, he will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Evelyn Bertholf Scanlan, at home; daughters, Lee Jean (Michael) Stith of Pitcher and Dawn (Wayne Foster) Loomis of South Otselic; his mother, Priscilla Scanlan of Norwich; grandchildren, Jacob, Casey, and Elyshia Stith, and Nellie, Ashlyn, and Ryan Loomis; and a great granddaughter, Leah Stith.
He is predeceased by his father, John “Jack” Scanlan.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no prior calling hours or funeral service. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of South Otselic at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, with Reverend Carl Johnson officiating.
