George Allan Jr.

PRESTON – George Welling Allan Jr., 63, of Preston, passed away late Tuesday night, Nov. 23, 2010, at his home.
Born in Brooklyn in July of 1947, George was the son of George and Alice Syvertson Allan Sr. His early years were spent in New York City, where he attended the local schools. A veteran of the United States Air Force, George served his country during the Viet Nam Era from 1967 to 1971. On March 21, 1970, in Norwich, George married Ruth Elizabeth Maynard. Following his honorable discharge, the Allans lived in Tucson, Ariz., for 10 years while George worked for U.S. Electric Motors. They relocated to Syracuse for a period of 25 years, with George being employed for nine of those years as an Electric Technician for GE. In 1995, he lived his dream by going to work as a trucker for Gypson Express Line, working there until he became disabled in 2003. During his time in the Norwich area, George attended SUNY Morrisville, where he earned his Associates Degree in Applied Science.
A quiet, almost shy man, George liked to putter with his tools, starting projects that he wouldn’t finish. He loved playing basketball and football, and was very politically opinionated, relishing a good political debate. George was proud of his service to his country, liked but never owned a Harley Davidson motorcycle, and had served as a volunteer with the Preston Fire Dept.
George is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Preston; his children and their spouses: Paul Scott and Alicia Allan of New Albany, Ind., Ann Marie and Kris Osborn of Newark Valley, Dawn Elizabeth and James Barnett of Norwich, and Laura Beth and Derek Jones of Lake St. Louis, Mo.; and by his adopted sons, Ryan Allan and Alexander MacIntyre of Preston. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Zachary and Isabella Allan, Hunter and Adam Osborn, Devon and Sean Barnett, and Baby Jones to-be; and by his special aunt and uncle, Doris and Harry Mott of Preston, who were there every day and every step of the way, helping in any way they could.
Funeral services for George will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Brian Conover, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment with full military rites will be in the North Norwich Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday from 6-8 p.m.
Please consider memorial contributions to either Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815; or the Calvary Baptist Church, 75 Calvary Drive, Norwich, NY 13815.
