Elaine Smith


NORWICH – Elaine Smith, 75, of Norwich, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital with her family at her side.
Elaine was born in Secaucus, N.J. on May 11, 1935, the daughter of the late William and Agnes (Schoenfelder) Staudt. On May 1, 1954 she married Arthur Smith and lived in New Jersey for 50 years where she raised their family. Elaine and her husband Art were fortunate enough to retire in 1984.
Elaine and her family moved to Plymouth where she and her husband pursued their dream to build and live in their own log home where they resided for the next 21 years. They were then able to celebrate their second retirement and moved to Swansboro, N.C. They were able to enjoy the warm weather for a year before the unexpected passing of Art. Elaine moved back to Norwich in 2006 to be closer to her family and resided at the Golden Age Apartments up until the time of her death. While at the Golden Age Apts. she enjoyed many hours of playing cards and other activities with the many friends she made. Elaine also had fun playing BINGO and going on many RSVP senior bus trips. She was a member of the American Legion Post 189 Auxiliary where she participated in many functions and activities.
This past year Elaine enjoyed a surprise 75th birthday party given by her family and was very instrumental in arranging a family cruise to Bermuda.
Elaine is survived by her three children; Kathy Krucher and her husband Thomas of Norwich, Fredrick Smith and his wife Susan of Wanaque, N.J. and Kim Steward and her husband Jeffrey of Norwich. She is also survived by her grandchildren; David and Katrina McMinn, Morgan and Lindsey Steward of Norwich, Jeffrey, Kristen and Derrick of Wayne, N.J., Brad Smith and Blake Smith of Wanaque, N.J. Three step granddaughters and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother and his wife Frederick and Jackie Staudt of Secaucus, N.J. and her sister Marion Tomasulo and her husband John of N.C.
Elaine was predeceased by her son Arthur Michael Smith in 1984 and her husband Arthur Charles Smith in 2006.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday, Nov. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The service will follow at 1 p.m. on Monday. Interment will immediately follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
