NORWICH – Bernice M. Smith, 90, life long area resident, passed away Monday, Nov. 15, 2010 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Bernice was born in Plymouth in January of 1920, the daughter of George and Winifred (Hazard) Barkley. She attended the local schools and entered the work force at an early age working for the Norwich Shoe Co. and the Norwich Knitting Mill. Bernice enjoyed many social activities and was a life member of American Legion Post # 189 Ladies Auxiliary and VFW Post #2782 Ladies Auxiliary where she also enjoyed playing many games of BINGO. Over the years she acquired a vast collection of stuffed animals which she truly enjoyed.
Bernice is survived by many nieces and nephews in the Chenango County area as well as her “adopted family” Dale and Donna Brooker and their 22 grandchildren, which Bernice thought of as her own.
Funeral services for Bernice will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11.
