Mary Scanlon


NORWICH – Mary Louise Scanlon, 91, formerly of Birdsall Street, passed away on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse.
Born Oct. 27, 1919 in Norwich, Mary was the daughter of Dominic and Iva (Standish) Scecchitano. She graduated from Norwich High School with the Class of 1937 and went on to graduate from the Southern Tier Beauty School in 1938. On Dec. 4, 1943, she married William H. Scanlon. Mary sold “Fuller Brush” from her home for many years until she started working as a secretary for Chenango County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, retiring in 1984. Following her retirement, Mary worked as a C.N.A. for Kimberly Quality Care.
During her leisure time, Mary loved playing cards, gardening and working as a Voter Registration Inspector for Ward 6 for many years.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Jane R. Viencek and Jean A. Jeffrey and her husband, Ronald, all of Syracuse; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Mary Patricia Wiggins, a son, William M. Scanlon, a brother, Dominic Scecchitano and a sister, Anne M. Hoag.
Funeral services for Mary will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at the Wilson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday from noon until the time of the service.
