Thomas Favaloro


NORWICH – Thomas R. Favaloro, 85, of Edgewater, Fla., formerly of Sherburne, passed away Oct. 19, 2010, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Tom was born on Dec. 30, 1924, in Norwich, to Frank and Mary Machio Favaloro. He grew up in Norwich and graduated from Norwich High School. Tom joined the Marine Corps immediately after graduation and served in the 2nd Marine Division during World War II, where he fought in a number of battles that included Tarawa and Saipan. During the war, Tom’s older brother, Frank, who was also in the Marines, serving at Iwo Jima, made arrangements for the two of them to briefly re-unite overseas. Tom was wounded and received a Purple Heart commendation.
While recovering from his wounds in New Zealand, he met his wife to be, Beverley Marie Shaw. After the war, Tom returned to the local area and was married to Beverley on Sept. 26, 1946, in Norwich. 
He worked as a Chenango County Deputy Sheriff for many years, and later became the Village of Sherburne Police Chief. He furthered his formal education by attending Cornell University and pursuing coursework in electrical engineering. Tom joined the Technical Appliance Company (TACO) in Sherburne, and was ultimately promoted to Director of Manufacturing, working there until he retired in 1994.
Beverley passed away in September 1986. Tom later married Barbara Burrows Joyce on Feb. 6, 1995.They moved to Edgewater, Fla. in 1999.
Tom was an active member of St. Malachy’s Roman Catholic Church in Sherburne for much of his life. He enjoyed the numerous family gatherings over the years, and later, living in the Florida climate. While in Florida, Tom joined the Edgewater Police sponsored Citizen Assisting Police Volunteer Program. He thoroughly enjoyed supporting the efforts of the Police Department, and could often be seen patrolling the community streets and directing traffic. Tom also frequently visited the local elementary school, where he would read stories to the children. He was well known in the Edgewater Landing Florida retirement community and will be fondly remembered by his numerous friends.
Survivors include Tom’s wife, Barbara, of Edgewater, Fla.; his four sons: Donald Favaloro of Rotterdam; Doug Favaloro and his wife, Alana, of South Plymouth; Mark Favaloro of Clifton Park; and Christopher Favaloro of Sherburne. He is also survived by three step-sons: Stephen Joyce of Sherburne; Myel Joyce of San Diego, Calif.; and Patrick Joyce of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., four step-daughters: Moira Joyce of Woodstock; Katie Joyce of Altamonte Springs, Fla..; and Valerie Joyce & Sheila Joyce, both of San Diego; his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Dorothy Favaloro, of Edgewater; and his sister-in-law, Johanne Fulcher, of Lady Lake, Fla.; fourteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Tom was predeceased by his first wife Beverley, his daughter, Helen, and his brother, Frank.
Friends may call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne, on Friday from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Malachy’s Church, Sherburne, at 1 p.m. Friday, followed by interment with military honors in St. Malachy’s Cemetery.
Immediately after the burial, friends and relatives are invited to gather in the St Malachy’s Church basement for a meal and refreshments, and to share memories of Tom. 
A special Memorial Service for Tom was held in Edgewater, Fla. on Oct. 21 and a Celebration of Life ceremony was held at the Edgewater Landing Clubhouse on Oct. 22.
