Donald Mastro


SHERBURNE – Donald R. Mastro, 79, of West Hill Rd., passed away Monday, Nov. 6, 2006 at the M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
He was born Aug. 27, 1927 in Rockland, MA, a son of the late Pasquale and Alice Mucci Mastrodomenico. He was a 1945 graduate of Rockland High School where he received the R.P.I. medal in math. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Civil Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1948. On Aug. 29, 1953, Donald was united in marriage to Catherine Merrill in St. Malachy’s Church, Sherburne.
Mr. Mastro was a civil engineer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Works Highways and Bridges until his retirement in 1990. He was also a registered professional engineer and land surveyor. He was a life long Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. Don was devoted to his family and loved having them around him. He took great pleasure in watching his grandchildren’s sports activities. He was a very intelligent man who was a wonderful mathematician and was great with numbers. He also enjoyed doing the New York Times crossword puzzles.
Mr. Mastro was a communicant of St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne. He was a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus; Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Town of Middleboro, Mass. for many years; and a member of American Legion Post #0001 of Albany.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine; his children, Richard M. and Charlene Mastro of Plymouth, MA; Raymond E. and Pamela Mastro, Barbara J. and Michael Colbert, Charles A. and Theresa Mastro, and Paul S. Mastro, all of Sherburne; his grandchildren, Erin, Timothy, Seth and Matthew Mastro; a step-granddaughter, Bernadette O’Connor; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Judith Mastro of Sebastian, Fla.; two nieces, Mrs. Steve (Shari) Turner of Rye, N.H.; Mrs. Paul (Laurie) McDermott of Randolph, Mass.; and several cousins. A sister, Annette Mastro predeceased him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday from St. Malachy’s Church, East State St., Sherburne, followed by burial with military honors in West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Wednesday from 3-6 p.m.
The Knights of Columbus will conduct a service at the funeral home at 2:45 p.m.
