Harry Conley


EARLVILLE – Harry Wayne Conley, 81, of Earlville, passed away on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010 at his home.
Born Feb. 19, 1929, he was the son of John A. and Irene Wells Conley of Lebanon. Raised by his maternal grandparents, Harry and Esther Wells in Earlville, Harry graduated from Earlville High School in 1946 and Delhi Ag and Tech College in 1948, where he studied Building Construction.
On July 2, 1950 he married Neva Mae Chesebro of Sherburne in the First United Methodist Church of Sherburne. She died in 1997.
Harry was self-employed for many years as a building contractor, and later operated a sawmill in Smyrna. He then became active in community affairs, serving on the Sherburne-Earlville School Board, and later was elected to the Sherburne Town Board for several years before becoming the Town Supervisor in 1996, a post he held until 2009. He was on the boards of several community organizations, and received many honors for his community activities, most recently the Town of Sherburne and Historic Park Society Citizen of the Year Award.
Harry is survived by four children; Carl and Linda Conley of Smyrna, Catherine and Steven Schonwetter of Queensbury, Cheryl and Douglas Wright of Mansfield, Pa., and Cory Conley and Curtis Helmus of Roslindale, Mass.; his grandchildren Stacie Waters, Rebecca Oppedisano, Tara Frontera, and Chad and Afton Wright; and seven great-grandsons. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Cooper of Ohio, and his very special friend, Mary Jane Palmer of Earlville.
Friends are invited to call at the First United Methodist Church in Sherburne on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Sherburne, with Rev. George Gallandorm, pastor, officiating.  Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Harry’s memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes Street, Norwich, NY 13815, or to the charity of your choice.
