Alene Smith


NORWICH – Alene R. Smith, 89, of 24 Canasawacta Street, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in Bainbridge on Oct. 17, 1920, Alene was the daughter of Edward John “Jack” and Lila (Albright) Peckham. She graduated from Bainbridge High School with the Class of 1938 and received her associate’s degree from Delhi Tech in 1940. Alene worked as a food service supervisor in several locations before retiring in 1977 from Delaware County BOCES.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Broad Street United Methodist Church and the Broad Street United Methodist Women. She volunteered at the Pink Door and for several Red Cross blood drives.
In 1940, in the East Guilford Methodist Church, Alene married E. A. Smith who predeceased her. She is survived by two children, Carol Ann Squires of Norwich and John T. (Jean) Smith of Chesapeake, Va.; seven grandchildren, Shaun and Kevin Perez, Jason Squires, Michael, Colleen and Robin Smith and Erica Smith-McGarity; six great grandchildren, Dallas, Alexis and Samuel Perez, James McGarity and Alex and Morgan Smith and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, James Smith, two brothers, Edward and Bruce Peckham and two sisters, Helen Eckert and Norma Boise.
Memorial services for Alene were held at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 2, 2010 at the Wilson Funeral Home. Rev. Donald Hammond officiated. Burial will take place in East Guilford Cemetery at a later date.
