Doris Sayles


EAST PHARSALIA – Doris L. Sayles, 84, of East Pharsalia, passed away at her home on Tuesday evening, July 27, 2010.
Born to Julius and Norma Matthews Grewe in North Pitcher in December of 1925, Doris attended school in South Otselic. She moved to East Pharsalia in 1958, remaining in that area for the remainder of her years. A gentle lady with a mellow outlook who liked to crochet and knit, loved nature and enjoyed watching the birds, Doris never worked out of her home, but instead devoted herself to her home and her family. On Sept. 20, 1946 in Norwich, she married Vaughn Sayles Sr.
Doris is survived by her children and their spouses: Rita and Larry Darling of McDonough, Vaughn Sayles of Ithaca and Barry Sayles and companion Christine Boulanger of McDonough; by her sister, Virginia Berch and husband Frank of Penn Yan; her grandchildren and their spouses: Joshua Burke, Nicole and Billy Bloomingdale, Melissa and Steve Gassert, and Wayne and Michelle Jeffrey. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Doris was predeceased by her husband, Vaughn, on June 25, 1989; by her daughter, Brenda Jeffrey; sisters Ida “Della and Adella” Wilcox, Dorothy Grewe and Dora Magarian; and brothers Walter and John Grewe.
Funeral services for Doris will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Stan Bennett will officiate. Interment will follow in the East Pharsalia Cemetery. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.
