Walter Sargeant


SHERBURNE – Walter Sylvester Sargeant (Sarge) “taxied in” Dec. 15, 1917 and “flew home” July 6, 2010 at The Carpenter House in Baton Rouge, La. He was 92, a resident of Zachary, and a native of Butternuts, NY.  He was retired from New York State Conservation Department where he had worked for 25 years.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William H. Sargeant and wife Meina Gerasimenko Sargeant of Ft. Worth, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Anne Buell and husband Rich Buell of Zachary; 10 grandchildren, Tamara Sargeant Solari and husband Brandon; Andrea Sargeant Chavez and husband Jeremy; Natalie Gerasimenko; Kenneth Sargeant and wife Susan; Keith Sargeant  and wife Chris; Kim Sargeant Feldpausch; Rebecca Buell Rodrigues and husband Ken; Joanna Buell; Carrie Buell; and Laura Buell; and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Janie Collie Sargeant; son Bruce W. Sargeant; parents, Harold G Sargeant and Anna Jeffery Sargeant.
He graduated valedictorian from South New Berlin High School and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was a veteran of World War II.   He trained to be a bombardier / navigator and his favorite plane was the C-47. He retired from the Air Force reserves as a Major. After active military service, he graduated from the New York Ranger School, Wanakena, NY. 
He met and married Janie Collie in Newport News, Va. in 1939. They lived in Sherburne, North Norwich, and Stamford, NY areas, building family residences. He was very involved in his children’s schools and their activities. 
After retiring from Conservation department, Sarge and Janie trailered across the USA, Mexico, and Canada before settling down in San Antonio.  He had a love for the outdoors, whether flying, golfing, camping or walking.  He volunteered for 15 years at the Institute of Texan Cultures, San Antonio, Texas and was a relief volunteer for the American Red Cross. He was an active member of Universal City United Methodist Church, Universal City, Texas.
After Janie died in 2004, he moved to Zachary and resided at Oakwood Village where he met new friends. Sarge was interested in people of all ages; he never met a stranger.
A memorial service will be held Aug. 28 in Zachary. Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 15467, Baton Rouge, LA, 70895, or the American Red Cross, 4655 Sherwood Common Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA, 70816.
