Ronald Nagelshmidt


CANAJOHARIE – Ronald Charles Nagelschmidt, a native of Cooperstown, who created “My Shopper,” a weekly advertising publication based in Cobleskill, died Sunday afternoon, July 11, 2010, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam after a brief, courageous battle with bile duct cancer. He was 69.
Born June 10, 1941, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, he later graduated from Cooperstown Central School with the Class of 1959. Ron then graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College in 1963, with an associate’s degree in advertising.
On Aug. 5, 1967, he married Regina Jones in St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Whitesboro.
Ron enjoyed a long career in newspaper advertising. He was first employed by the Utica Newspapers and served as advertising manager for the Clinton Courier. In 1970, he joined the staff of The Evening Sun and in September of 1973, was named that paper’s first retail advertising manager, a newly-created supervisory position.
Along with his wife Regina, Ron created, owned and operated “My Shopper,” a weekly advertising publication. It later became a part of Snyder Communications in Norwich, where he served as sales manager.
During his career Ron belonged to numerous advertising organizations and he and Regina enjoyed collecting antique advertising materials and traveling together.
He was also an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and a devoted supporter of Cooperstown Central School sports teams, attending every sporting event that he could.
Ron is survived by his wife of 43 years, Regina, of Canajoharie; their daughter, Lisa Ordway and her husband, Joseph of East Hampton, Conn.; one grandson, Jacks on Ordway; one sister, Barbara Sheldon and her husband, Elwyn of Richfield Springs; two brothers, John H. Nagelschmidt and his wife, Karen of Cortland and Stephen F. (”Sharky”) Nagelschmidt and his wife, Cynthia of Cooperstown; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Seavey and her husband, Donald of Marcy, and Marilyn McGowan and her husband, Patrick of Oriskany; one brother-in-law, E. Richard Jones and his wife, Claudette of Sedona, Ariz.; two cousins, Don and Edward Turner; and numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews throughout the United States.
He was predeceased by his mother, Alice A. (Hobbs) Nagelschmidt, who died Oct. 23, 1990.
Ron’s family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 15, 2010, at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding. Burial will follow in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.
Ron’s family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Capital District Cancer Resource Foundation for the benefit of New York Oncology Hematology of Amsterdam, 1003 Loudon Road, P.O. Box 610, Latham, NY 12110 or to the American Cancer Society, 13 Beech St., Johnson City, NY 13790.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
