Charlotte Stafford


OXFORD – Charlotte F. Stafford, 91, of Oxford, passed away on July 2, 2010 at her home.
She was born on April 14, 1919 in Oxford, a daughter of the late George L. and Clara May (Tew) Stafford.
She is survived by her nephews, Richard L. Stafford of Flemington, N.J., James Stafford of Charlestown, Ind., and David T. Stafford of Ballston Spa; several great nieces and great nephews also survive.
Charlotte graduated from Oxford Academy and Central School, Elmira College, and SUNY Albany. She was a school librarian in West Junior High School in Binghamton and Norwich Junior High School, where she retired in 1977. She was a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Association. She was a charter member and first President of Omicron Chapter (Binghamton) of Alpha Delta Kappa, International Honorary Teachers Sorority. She was a charter member of Binghamton Chapter, Women’s National Book Association.
Charlotte was a communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oxford for many years and served on the Vestry for three terms and as clerk of the Vestry for many years. She was a member of Lafayette Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Matron in 1973 and 1982. She was a past Associate Grand Warder for the Grand Chapter, OES, of the State of New York and also served as chapter musician.
Charlotte was a member and past President and past trustee of the Oxford Historical Society. She was a member and past President of the Oxford BPW. She was a member and past President of the Joseph Jefferson Book Club. She was the first treasurer and later trustee of the Oxford Revitalization Project. She was a member of Captain John Harris Chapter of the NSDAR. She was appointed Town of Oxford and Village of Oxford historian in 1977. She was a member of the Oxford Birthday Club.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 9 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oxford, with the Rev. Charles Taylor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. Members of Lafayette Chapter, OES will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 36 Main St., Oxford or the Oxford Historical Society.
