Donald J. Newell, 67, of Norwich, NY, and Montrose, PA, passed away June 21st 2025 at Bridgewater Rehab and Nursing, with Lourdes Hospice after his battle with Multiple Myeloma.
He was born February 22nd 1958 in Norwich, NY, to the late Donald C. Newell and the late Nancy R. Biviano Newell.
He graduated from Norwich High School after attending summer school due to either donuts in the parking lot or something to do with a fire extinguisher.
He married young and leaves behind his son Joey, his daughter Ashley and a second marriage leaves behind his son Mathieu and stepson John Squires. He is also survived by his companion of 13 years Shelley Lewis and her son Tyler. He is also survived by his sister Pamela and grandchildren Melania and Emilia Newell. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his son Tommy.
He worked many places during his lifetime, but did not mind well at most and started his own autobody shop and used car sales. He enjoyed being at the car lot, talking to prospective customers and friends that would stop by just to chat.
His passion was racing and building stock cars. The 94 had several wins at different dirt tracks located in upstate NY. He built is own street stocks for himself and his dad. He also sponsored a Modified and Crate Sportsman car. He finished his career in an IMCA car.
He also enjoyed camping (when he could back the trailer in). He stayed at racetracks and then a place in Sylvan Beach where he could take his boat out on Oneida Lake with the dogs, Lucifer and Stewart. His first trip out on the boat, he came back in and said “Look, it’s not wrecked, I don’t need to buy tires or new shocks”. He was referring to the race car.
He was generous with his time and support to other race car drivers and bought Little Leaguers ice cream after the game, win or lose.
Arrangements are being made by Daniel Regan Funeral Home and per his wishes there will be no services. The family plans on a Celebration of Life TBD at a later date.
Memorial contribution can be made to the Montrose Minute Men, 23 Hollister Dr., Montrose, Pa. 18801 or to your favorite racetrack to add to the purse of any class of cars.
