Walter Scholz


NORWICH – Memorial services for Walter (Walt) Scholz will be held on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the Howser-Fillmer Mortuary in Norfolk, Nebraska. Interment will be at Prospect Hill Cemetary, Norfolk, Neb. Walt died at Faith Regional Health Services, Norfolk on June 13, 2010.
Walt was born May 8, 1921 in Helmstedt, Germany. He was the son of Karl and Hildegard (Kott) Scholz. He emigrated with his parents to the U.S.A in 1925, taking up residence in Brooklyn. He attended elementary school there. In 1930 he moved with his family to Freedom Plains, where he continued elementary school in a one room school. He attended Arlington High School, Poughkeepsie, graduating in 1939. He moved to Queens in 1940 and moved to Hempstead in 1941. He worked in an air craft plant and several insurance firms. In 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Force. He attended Aircraft Mechanic School, served at Bryan AFB and was discharged in 1946.
In 1945 he married Maybelle Abbott of Hempstead. They were married at Mitchell Field AFB in Garden City. He took employment with Hooper Holmes, Inc. of Basking Ridge, N.J. in 1946, as an Insurance Investigator covering a portion of Long Island, retiring in 1978. The couple had one daughter, Jane Juhlin. In 1961 he and his family moved to St. James. On retirement in 1978, he and his wife moved to Norwich. In 1998 Walt and his wife moved to Norfolk, Neb. to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren. He was an avid reader and enjoyed regular visits to the Norfolk Public Library until he was no longer able to get out. Walt was an Active Model Railroader and a former member of the National Model Railroad Association, Inc., and several regional divisions. He won many awards. He was a member of the Friends of the Library (Guernsey Memorial Library), the Chenango Historical Society and the Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxillary, all of Norwich.
Walt is survived by his daughter Jane Juhlin of Norfolk, Neb., grandson Eric Juhlin of Norfolk, NE and granddaughter Lori Juhlin of Lexington, NE. His wife Maybelle predeceased him in 1999.
