Marian Root


McDONOUGH – Marian L. Root of McDonough passed away on June 1, 2010 at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.
She was born on April 28, 1920 in Pharsalia Hook a daughter of the late Henry and Flossie (Newton) Gates. In 1948 she married Ray J. Root, who passed away on April 28, 1960.
She is survived by her children, George Root of Port Crane, David and Kathy Root of Phoenix City, Ala., John and Betty Root of McDonough and Henry and Pat Root of Smithville Flats; her sister, Lois Huttleston Parker of Oxford and her step son, Neal Root. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her sister and brother in law, Jennie and George Cook, her brother and sister in law, John and Ethel Gates, her brothers in law, Lynn Huttleston and John Parker, and her step children, Raymond Root and Nina Root.
Marian was a master sewer and loved to make quilts for her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to play cards and go hunting. She shot her first buck in the eye, while it was going full speed. She was a survivor of the 1935 flood. She was interviewed by WSKG television and was involved with the film β€œThe Flood of β€˜35.” She was a member of the Smithville Flats Presbyterian Church, the Genegantslet Fire Co., and the Smithville Flats Historical Society. She was a member of the Pomona Grange for over 75 years.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at noon at the Kennedy Funeral Home, 21 N. Chenango St., Greene, with Diane Brower former pastor of her church officiating. Burial will be in Sylvan Lawn Cemetery, Greene.
Friends may call at the Kennedy Funeral Home, Greene on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Genegantslet Fire Co. Building Fund, PO Box 151, Smithville Flats or the Greene Emergency Squad.
