Mary M. Fern
Mary M. Fern (née Maiurano), aged 84, passed away peacefully at her home in Wake Forest, NC, on August 3, 2024.
Born on November 23, 1939, in Norwich, NY, Mary grew up in a loving family with her parents, Joseph “Pep” and Rose (D’Ambra) Maiurano.
Mary attended Norwich City Schools and graduated from Norwich High School in 1958.
On October 8, 1960, Mary married the love of her life, Dick Fern. They spent nearly 64 wonderful years together, building a life centered around family and love. Mary spent years as a stay-at-home mother, focused on caring for her two children, as well as many of her nieces and nephews. She later spent a decade working at Guernsey Memorial Library. After retirement in 1998, Mary and Dick moved to Wake Forest NC.
Mary’s family was the cornerstone of her life. She found immense joy in being present for her children, grandchildren and extended family. Whether watching soccer games, attending dance recitals, birthday parties, or enjoying Sunday brunches (and mimosas) at her son’s restaurant, (ish) Delicatessen, Mary was a constant, unwavering source of love and support. Her warm and genuine presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Mary also had a special place in her heart for the beach, spending many springs at Ocean Isle Beach, NC. Mary had an extraordinary talent for finding treasured sand dollars and shells during her walks along the shore, a pastime she cherished.
Mary is survived by her devoted husband, Dick, of Wake Forest, NC; her daughter, Katie (Chris) Mahan, of Richmond, VA; her son, Matt Fern, of Raleigh, NC; and two beloved granddaughters, Neiley and Hannah Mahan, of Richmond, VA; as well as her cherished dog and companion, Gypsy. She also leaves behind her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Dawn Maiurano of Norwich; sisters-in-law Carol Maiurano of Norwich and Joanne Tarbell of Sherburne and many nieces, nephews and their families; and special friend, Carole Gagliano of Auburn.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Rose and Pep Maiurano; sister and brother-in-law, Kate and Ken Stewart; sister, Rosaria Delmonico; and two brothers, Jim Maiurano and Francis “Pep” Maiurano.
Calling hours will be held at Wilson Funeral Home in Norwich, NY, on Thursday, August 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Norwich on Friday, August 16, at 1 p.m., followed by interment at St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Mary M. Fern will be remembered for her unwavering love, gentle spirit, and the countless ways she touched the lives of those around her.
