Karen Sue (Simpson) Johns

Karen, a loving mother and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2024.
Karen was born on March 21, 1955, in Norwich, New York, to Aubrey and Donna Simpson. She grew up in a close-knit family and carried the values of kindness, compassion, and resilience throughout her life. After graduating from Oxford Academy High School, she pursued her passion for nursing getting her LPN at SUNY Morrisville. Years later, she returned to school and earned her associate’s degree from Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, VA. She then got a job at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA, where she worked for years until moving back to Roanoke.
Karen dedicated over 30 years of her life to nursing. She traveled as a nurse, was an operating room nurse and a home health nurse as she got closer to retirement. Her commitment to nursing extended beyond the hospital, as she often volunteered for various community programs and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of families. She volunteered as a scout leader and sometimes would manage the local 4H chapter. She loved farming and outdoor activities, often encouraging young kids to participate and was a supporter of the FFA.
Karen was also known for her Virginia Tech spirit. She enjoyed watching games, traveling to the football games in the fall with her family, and wearing all her fan gear. She also quite enjoyed gardening, candle making and cooking, often sharing her creations with friends and family. Her home was always open, a place of comfort and warmth for all who knew her.
Karen is survived by her children Jeremy Symonds (Vera) and James Symonds (Molly). She is also survived by sister Kathy Houser, her brother Marty Simpson (Cathy), youngest brother Mathew Simpson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Last but certainly not least, Karen’s Schnauzers Taboo and Bella and her “grandbabies “ as she called them, James and Molly’s Schnauzers Fritzy and Giselle. She held a special place in her heart for all of them and they were wonderful companions to her. She also enjoyed spending time with Jeremy and Vera’s GSD’s when she visited them in Fredericksburg.
A memorial service to celebrate Karen’s life will be held in McDonough, NY. Once arrangements have been made, family and friends will be notified.
Karen Johns (Simpson) touched the lives of many with her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Homeward Bound Schnauzers Rescue.
