Richard Abbott


OXFORD – Richard C. Abbott, 60 ,of Oxford passed away unexpectedly on May 24, 2010 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
He was born on Feb. 10, 1950 in Johnson City, a son of the late Raymond and Mary (Yohoe) Abbott. On Aug. 21, 1977, he married Holly Brown, who survives.
Besides his wife, Holly, he is survived by his daughters, Carly Abbott and companion Dustin Hendricks of Norwich and Meg Abbott of Albany; his brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Carol Abbott of Tennessee; his sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Drue Muehs of Horseheads; his grandchildren, Jud Hendricks, Sam Hendricks and Lila Hendricks; his mother-in-law, Jeanette Brown of Oxford; his brother-in -law and sister-in-law, Todd and Gail Brown of Sidney and his beloved dog, Ramona. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Dick was a graduate of Oneonta High School, Class of 1968 and he attended American University and SUNY Oneonta. He served in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to a nuclear submarine for four years. He then was employed as a combustion engineer for New York State Electric and Gas Co. for 27 years, retiring in 2007. He served the Village of Oxford as a trustee for five years and as Mayor for four years. He was currently serving as Zoning Officer for the Village and Town of Oxford. He was a former chairman of the Chenango County Democratic Party. He had a passion for his antiques and operated his own antique shop. He also loved gardening. He was a member of Fort Hill Post #376, American Legion of Oxford.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford with Rev. John Martin, pastor of the Oxford United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial with full military honors, by members of Fort Hill Post #376, American Legion, will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Emergency Squad or the Oxford Fire Department.
