George Godfrey


NORWICH – George W. Godfrey, 92, of Birdsall Street, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in Norwich on July 25, 1914, George was the Son of George F. and Ethel (Wheeler) Godfrey. After graduating from Norwich High School, George worked at several jobs before serving with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Upon his discharge he joined the workforce at Scintilla in Sidney and retired in 1970. He then worked as a meat inspector for the New York State Agriculture and Markets Department until ill health forced his retirement in 1976.
George enjoyed all sports and was an avid Syracuse University fan. He also enjoyed crosswords. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and of the Romars group of the church. George was also active in scouting, both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and was a member of the scouting roundtable.
On July 28, 1946, in Norwich, George married Gladys (Fuller) Godfrey. Gladys died on March 14, 1990. He is survived by four sons and their wives, Greg and Marguerite Godfrey, Gordon and Susan Godfrey of Arlington, Va., Gerald Godfrey of Binghamton and Garth and Diane Godfrey of Ruby, N.Y.; grandchildren Wayne, Patrick, Hannah, Corin, Devan, Brandon, Cindy, Stacy and Kimberly; two sisters, Dorris Lyon of Oxford and Cleora Shepardson of Lakeland, Fla. and one nephew, John Rowan of Hixson, Tenn. George was predeceased by two sisters, Hazel Godfrey and Celia Rowan.
Funeral services for George will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Wilson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 7-9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in memory of George be made to your favorite charity.
