EAST PHARSALIA – Ronald Jervis George, 85, formerly of East Pharsalia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at the New York Veterans’ home in Oxford.
Born and raised in Norwich, Ron was the son of Charles F. and Phebe Mae (Jervis) George. He attended Norwich City Schools. In November of 2001, through Operation Recognition, he received his high school diploma for the knowledge and experience obtained while on active military duty.
Ron was drafted into the armed forces at the age of 18 and served in the Army during World War II as a Tech/Sergeant. Ron served with the Army in North Africa (Oran, Casablanca, and Algiers), Italy (Sicily and Napoli) and on the border of southern France.
Ron was a member of St. Matthew’s AME Zion Church, and served as its treasurer/bookkeeper. In 1946, he joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Christy Rock Post 2782, for which he served as its House Chairman, Jr. Vice Commander, Sr. Vice Commander, and Commander. He received his VFW lifetime membership in 1976. Ron also served for ten years with the East Pharsalia Fire Police.
Ron was a member of the American Motorcycle Association and was a bowler in many leagues. He also enjoyed taking fishing trips to Lake Ontario, repairing small engines and caring for his garden and lawn.
Ron lived in East Pharsalia until becoming ill with Alzheimer’s disease, after which time he resided at the New York Veterans’ Home in Oxford. He was employed by the Raymond Corporation, where he worked for 23 years. He retired from Raymond in 1987 as a Process Engineer. After his retirement, Ron traveled to St. Croix.
Ron is survived by his daughters, Sharon Oliver (Lionel), of New Rochelle, and Arlene Farnsworth (John), of Norwich; grandsons Lionel Oliver II, Lamar Oliver, and Nathaniel Farnsworth (Lauren); granddaughter Danielle Farnsworth; great granddaughter Jade Farnsworth; and many nieces and nephews. Ron was predeceased by his brothers, Raymond, Frederick, Reginald and Robert, and sisters Helen and Josephine.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 4 at the Broad Street United Methodist Church. Friends are invited to call at the church from 10 am until the time of the service. Burial with military honors will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
