Janet R. Hazen


Janet R. Hazen, 92, of Sherburne, NY, passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at the Crouse Community Center in Morrisville with her loving family at her side. She was born on September 21, 1930, in Syracuse, a daughter of the late Hobart and Henrietta (Nash) Rickmyre. She was a graduate of Sherburne Central School and Endicott Junior College in Beverly, MA. On July 28, 1951, in Sherburne, Janet was united in marriage to Wayne Hazen. He predeceased her on June 20, 1994.
Janet was a member of the Sherburne United Church of Christ, where she sang in the church choir and was a bell choir director. She worked at NBT Bank as a teller and secretary until her retirement in 1986. Janet enjoyed gardening, flowers, canning vegetables, macramé/cross stitch and playing the piano. During the annual Pageant of Bands in Sherburne, Janet enjoyed working the UCC booth selling food including her own homemade chili. She also shared fond memories of being the drum majorette in parades when she was in high school. She was a life member of the Sherburne Order of the Eastern Star.
Janet is survived by her four daughters: Holly (Ronald) Brinski of Titusville, FL., Brenda (David) Donegan of Fairview, PA., Lisa (David) Kane of Baldwinsville, Jamie Hazen (Richard Supa) of Lisle; a sister Susan Lotz of Houston, TX.; grandchildren: Daniel (Angela) Fleet of East Syracuse, David Donegan, Jr. (Megan McGrew) of Reno, NV., Amanda (Becca) Donegan of Girard, PA., Sarah Donegan (Michael Dill) of Erie, PA., Brian Kane (Anna Marcinowski) of Castleton; five great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Janet was predeceased by a granddaughter, Melissa Fleet Carubio in 1999, her companions, George Elliot in 2005 and Joseph Belush in 2022.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. from the Sherburne United Church of Christ, 1 S. Main St., Sherburne, NY 13460. Friends are invited and may call at the church from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.
Donations in Janet’s memory may be made to the Sherburne United Church of Christ or the Crouse Community Activities Fund, 101 South St., Morrisville, NY 13408.
