Donald Mcdowell


NORWICH – Donald S. McDowell, 84, of Norwich passed away April 21, 2010 at his home.
He was born on Aug. 6, 1925 in Syracuse, the son of the late William and Katherine (Smith) McDowell. On Oct. 8, 1955 in Central Presbyterian Church, Avon, he married Jean E. Gott.
Don is survived by his wife of 54 years Jean G. McDowell, “a favorite,” his three sons, David (Amy), William, Andrew (Camille), four grandchildren Andrew Litzinger, Jennifer McDowell (Nick Majors), Andrew McDowell, and Cate McDowell and one great granddaughter Jaelyne Majors, his sister Marge Kennedy and several nieces and nephews.
Don lived in Norwich most of his life. He was born Aug. 6, 1925, graduated for Norwich High School in 1943 as an honor student and Captain of the Tennis Team. While in school he enlisted in the Army ASTP program and was assigned to Fort Dix. The program was later scrapped and he was assigned to the 297 – in the European Theatre, Eastern Germany. Following discharge Don attended RPI, graduating in 1950. He was then employed by GLA (General Laboratory Associates) as an engineer. He continued as an engineer as GLA was bought, retiring in 1988 from what was then Unison. In his retirement, Don enjoyed golfing, traveling, gardening and volunteering at the Classic Car Museum.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, West Main St. Norwich with Rev. Charles Taylor and Rev. Edward Stiess officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by members of Lt. Warren Eaton Post American Legion and Christy Rock Post, VFW. A luncheon in the church fellowship hall will follow.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, West Main St., Norwich, or a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Kennedy Funeral Home, 21 N. Chenango St., Greene.
