Margaret Noon

SHERBURNE – Margaret Marie Mulligan Noon of Chapel St., Sherburne, passed away Tuesday April 20, 2010 at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton. She was 99 years old.
Mrs. Noon was born on Jan. 27, 1911, to Joseph Patrick and Mary Ellen (Brennan) Mulligan. She graduated from Norwich High School in 1927 and earned a B.S. in Education from SUNY Albany in 1931. Her education taught her the value of learning, and so she became a teacher herself, touching the lives of hundreds of students during her long career. She launched the business department at Wells, NY high school where she worked from 1931 to 1934.
When she moved to Sherburne in 1934, she taught typing, shorthand, and other business subjects at Sherburne Central School. She was a serious teacher – strong, bright, patient, and firm. She was beloved by all her students.
In 1938, she married James Patrick Noon, Sr. in St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Norwich, and together they had four children: James Patrick, Mary Ann, Shelia Margaret, and Kathleen Patricia. Mr. Noon started a photography business and was a wonderful husband and father until his untimely death in 1947. Mrs. Noon’s strength of character and faith in God helped her overcome the loss and raise four children to love learning and education as much as she did.
In later years, Mrs. Noon was an avid reader, eager bridge partner, and library booster. She belonged to three area libraries, serving on the board of the Sherburne Public Library, and she herself read several books a week. She belonged to two bridge clubs, and maintained deep friendships with neighbors and the Sherburne community. She was always there for people in need – whether in need of a casserole, a conversation, or a ride to church. A truly independent spirit, she took lengthy (and speedy!) road trips into her 90s. She took joy from life, big things and little: she loved traveling to Europe, but also watching the birds in her yard.
Mrs. Noon’s passion for giving to others came from her deep faith in God. A devout Catholic her whole life, she was a godly women in both her word and deed. Mass at St. Malachy’s of Sherburne was part of her every Sunday, but being Catholic was something she did every day, in the way that she treated others and inspired her community. Her faith, spirit, and humor touched everyone who knew her.
Surviving are her children: James Patrick and Elizabeth Noon of Newton, Mass.; Mary Ann and Thomas Haw of Oakland, Calif.; Shelia Margaret and Phillip Klein of Marietta, Ga.; Kathleen Patricia and William Hinton of Grove City, Pa; 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jennifer Noon in 1970; a brother John in 1944; and two sisters, Eleanor Pennock in 1979 and Mary Rosher in 1986.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. from St. Malachy’s Catholic Church, East State St. Sherburne. Interment will follow in St. Malachy’s Parish Cemetery. Friends are invited and may call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home 10 S. Main St. Sherburne on Thursday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at 2:45 p.m.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Sherburne Public Library PO Box 702, Sherburne, and NY 13460-0702.
