MARGARET BRITTON
SHERBURNE – Margaret H. Britton, 87, of Knapp Rd., passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at her home.
She was born Nov. 9, 1922 in New York City, a daughter of the late John and Marie Sierek Hirschman. She was a graduate of Canisius College and Edward J. Mayer Hospital in Buffalo, where she received her L.P.N. degree. On Aug. 7, 1943, Margaret married Lisle D. Britton in Buffalo. He predeceased her on Sept. 10, 2004. Margaret had worked at the Earlville Nursing Home, and then Chenango Memorial Hospital for 16 years until her retirement in 1984. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother whose family was her greatest joy.
Mrs. Britton was a member of the United Church of Christ in Sherburne and the Women’s Fellowship where she held many offices including Secretary and President. She was very community minded and was active for many years working for the Red Cross Blood Bank and Meals on Wheels for 60 Plus. She had also been a member of the Sherburne Home Bureau.
Surviving are her children; Diane and Leslie Wedge of Homer; Kathleen Verratti of Wheelwright, Mass.; Lisle J. and Gloria Britton of Sherburne; Patricia and Richard Kellogg of North Norwich; Midge and John Daviau of Chittenango; Ronald and Phyllis Britton of Sherburne; Karen Britton and Thomas Southwick of Leicester, Mass.; Steven and Holly Britton of Charlton; 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son-in-law, John Verratti; four brothers, Steven, John R., John L. and Louis Hirschman; and two sisters, Catherine Tucci and Elsie Paschek.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday from the United Church of Christ, 1 South Main St., Sherburne.
Interment in West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne, will be private.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815; the Sherburne Emergency Squad, PO Box 924, Sherburne, NY 13460; or to the United Church of Christ, Sherburne NY 13460.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.
