Charlotte Dolan

NORWICH – Charlotte Harris Dolan died peacefully on April 13, 2010 in Syracuse, New York.
She was born in Norwich on April 11, 1912 to Dr. Blinn A. Harris and Isabelle Balch Harris. She was raised in Norwich and graduated from Norwich High School. On April 23, 1941, at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, she married Donald B. Dolan, also of Norwich who passed away on Feb. 12, 2009. She was predeceased by two sisters, Polly H. Baker and Lucy H. Briggs.
Early in her marriage, the Dolans lived in Binghamton and in Norwich.  Later they moved to Long Island and in 1962 to Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. Upon retirement in 1974, they returned to Norwich. For many years, they wintered at Silver Shores, a retirement community in Key Largo, Florida.
Charlotte, who was known all her life by her childhood name, Bubby, entered the business world just months before the stock market crash of 1929. She held a variety of jobs in the Norwich area in that difficult period. After the United States entered World War II, in 1941, she worked in Sidney at the Scintilla Magneto Division of Bendix Aviation Corp., which employed many women in the critical task of assembling alternators for aircraft. Later, on Long Island, Charlotte began her retail career for Lord & Taylor. She quickly advanced at the upscale retailer, becoming manager of the sportswear department. When she and Don moved to Pennsylvania, she was awarded another managerial job in the Young New Yorker Department at the Narberth branch of Lord & Taylor until her retirement.
A radiant optimist all her life, Charlotte was beloved wherever she happened to be. Her kindness and generosity touched many in the communities she lived in and especially her family. Her devotion to her husband, who died in 2009, was always on display. She is survived by three nieces, Brenda Baker Griffing, of Fort Lauderdale; Sue Baker Lewis, of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; and Jeanette (John) Briggs Rice of Syracuse; two great nieces, Renee (Jeffrey) Gragale and Jennifer (Erik) Boergesson of Baldwinsville; one great nephew, Christopher (Maggie) Rice of Syracuse; three great, great nephews, Jordan and Jacob Fragale and Brigham Boergesson and two great, great nieces, Chloe Boergesson and Lia Rice.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Charlotte will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Paul’s Church. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Thursday morning from 10 until 11 a.m.
