Helen Borchers

NORWICH – Helen E. Borchers, 94, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010 at the Chenango Memorial Hospital Residential Health Care Facility from complications following hip surgery.
Born on July 10, 1915 in New York City, Helen was the youngest of four children born to Nicholas Paul and Antoinette Marie (Csordes) Marschel.
By her own description, Helen was fresh, feisty, fun loving, blunt and extremely independent in mind, spirit and action. A rich life is a balance of good, bad and mediocre events and her life was indeed rich. Those who knew her will have a smile and a story to tell about her. Trained as a bookkeeper, Helen worked at various businesses in New York City until after her marriage to Charles Borchers, when she moved to Rockland County. In 1953, after purchasing a small farm, she and her husband moved to and lived in Nineveh until 1966. While her husband farmed, she returned to her profession and worked in Binghamton until her retirement. In 1996, she and Charles moved to Norwich to be closer to her youngest daughter and her family.
Helen was predeceased by her husband of fifty-four years; her parents; her siblings, Antoinette M. Chefalo, Amelia W. Behnken and Nicholas Paul Marshall. She was also predeceased by a son-in-law, Joseph McDowell. Helen is survived by her daughter, Constance C. Grell McDowell, her daughter and son-in-law, Charlene B. and Troy G. Walling, by granddaughter, Stephanie L. McDowell Michaels, grandson, Tyler C. Walling and fiancée, Lauren E. Benenati, by two great grandchildren, Kyle and Kara Michaels and two nephews.
A memorial service for Helen will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 12 at the United Church of Christ First Congregational in Norwich. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Chenango Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Chenango County SPCA or to Chenango County Meals on Wheels, all located in Norwich.
The arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting the funeral home website at:  www.wilsonfh.com.
Love never disappears for death is a non-event.
I have merely retired to the room next door.
You and I are the same; What we were for each other,
We still are.
Speak to me as you always have,
Do not use a different tone, do not be sad.
Continue to laugh at what made us laugh.
Smile and think of me.
Life means what it has always meant.
The link is not severed.
Why should I be out of your soul if I am out of your site?
I will wait for you, I am not here,
but just on the other side of this path.
You see, all is well.
