Eleanor Mathewson Knapp passed away unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday January 25, 2022. She was born in Norwich on April 13, 1941 to the late Herburt and Laura Mathewson. Eleanor worked in her early years at the Norwich Shoe Factory and later at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton. Her greatest joy in life was her family who she would talk about to anyone who would listen. She was known to be a VERY proud grandmother.
On October 28, 1960, Eleanor married Robert Knapp in Norwich and he predeceased her on January 13, 2015. Survivors include her children, Laurie and Randy Murray, Roberta Kerwin, Frank and Missy Knapp, Ron Moore, Edwin and Bobbi Jo Knapp, Kevin Knapp, and Frederick Knapp; her grandchildren, Derrick and Blessing Murray, Chet and Carrie Dennison, Stephen Dennison, Coral and Matt Kane, Bruce Jeffrey, Darren Knapp, Katie Knapp, Wayne Moore, Rob Knapp, and Joe Knapp; 11 great-grandchildren; her brother, Tom Mathewson; her sisters in law, Frances Ohl, and Mary Knapp; many nieces and nephews; as well as her canine companion and guardian, Sami.
Along with her husband, Eleanor was predeceased by her grandchildren, Nicholas Murray, and Christine Knapp; her great-grandson, Connor Riley; her brother, LeRoy Mathewson; her sisters in law, Jean Mayne, Mina Knapp, Dorothy Knapp, and Olive (Betty) Tamburro; her brothers in law, Jim Knapp, and Clarence Knapp; and her son in law, Thomas Kerwin.
A graveside service for Eleanor will take place in the spring at North Norwich Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Eleanor’s name may be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital or to the North Norwich Fire Department.
