Edward Smith


OXFORD – Edward Thomas Smith, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, in the NYS Veterans Home of Oxford, where he had made his home for the past year.
The son of Thomas and Mina Smith, Ed was born in Broome County in July of 1935. He attended and graduated from the Whitney Point High School, where he excelled in track and set a couple of records. Following his graduation, he served his country in the United States Army. Ed was employed for over 20 years by the Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center. Following his retirement, he did home health care in Broome County, and also worked for a time in the maintenance department of the Windsor High School. A man who loved the outdoors and enjoyed walking his dog, Ed was a very caring person who always put everyone else ahead of himself. In his later years, he enjoyed playing golf and had hit a hole-in-one at the Windsor Golf Course.
Ed is survived by his children and their spouses: Francine and Kevin Cross of Lake Luzerne, and Edward C. and Deborah Smith of Norwich; by his grandson, Alex Cross; step-grandchildren Derek Kirkaldy and Christina Kirkaldy; his brother, Gilbert Smith; sister-in-law. Hope; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his youngest son, Mark Alan Smith.
A memorial service for Ed will be held early in June from The Wolf Mountain Nature Center of Smyrna. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be sent to The Wolf Mountain Nature Center, c/o Ed Smith, 30 Midland Drive, Apt. M-6, Norwich, NY 13815, with checks made out to The Wolf Mountain Nature Center.
