Helen Broten


NORWICH – Helen Marilyn Broten, 81, was killed Feb. 9, 2010 in a two-car accident in Live Oak, Fla. She lived in Norwich, at 47 Front St., from 1958 until becoming a “Snowbird” in 2001.
She was born Oct. 25, 1928 in Jamestown. She graduated from Jamestown High School. Helen was predeceased by her parents Le Roy and Ann Carlson of Jamestown.
Helen lived a full, varied life that included Master’s Swimmer, Nurses Aide, Hospice Volunteer, Nursing Home Volunteer, Friend of The Baseball Hall of Fame, Friend of the Chenango County Historical Association, Norwich PTA, Cub Scout Volunteer, and Mother. She owned businesses in real estate, antiques, a restaurant in Cooperstown and a stock car track in Lake City, Fla, before retiring in Live Oak, Fla.
She loved to travel and travelled extensively with her husband, Robert, and sons, James and Michael, who survives her. She is also survived by a daughter, Cindy Smith (of Ohio) and grandchildren, Elizabeth Broten, Jacqueline Broten, Justin Van Stee, Megan Shopbell, John Smith, Rachelle Smith-Haug, and Tony Smith.
She loved coming back to Norwich and visiting with friends in Norwich.
