Edith “Edie” Smith


Edith “Edie” Smith, of Oxford NY, passed away on Wednesday, October 13, 2021. She was born on August 8, 1938, the daughter of Edgar and Mary Claire (Fitzpatrick) Burr.
Edie was raised in New Berlin with her siblings and loved spending time on her grandparents’ farm. After graduating high school, she moved to Utica where she met and later married Robert Smith. Edie and Bob enjoyed many happy years together raising their family. Always protective and caring, Edie had a tenacious love.
She was employed for many years with H&R Block as a district manager, and later served as secretary for First Baptist Church in Norwich until her retirement two years ago. She made many lasting friendships there, most notably Pastor Dave and his wife Martha. Edie bowled competitively for many years, even appearing on television. She was an avid reader and an amazing cook. In later years, Edie and Bob spent time travelling and became Florida snowbirds.
Edie leaves behind her children, Robin Sortino, of Utica; Maureen Jones and Don Heath, of Florida; and Scott (Jinky) Smith, of Bainbridge; her cherished grandchildren, Robert Sortino and Corinne Sobiegra; Nathan (Nicole) Sortino; and Brittany Jones; her great-grandchildren, Raina Soriano, and Derek Sortino; her sister, Celia (Bob) Parent; her brothers and sisters in law, Art (Jackie) Jones, Dale (Lisa) Smith; Gail Medici; and Mike Smith; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Edie was predeceased by her husband, Robert; her son, Terry; and her brother, Richard.
