AFTON – Joyce S. Swart, 80 of Afton, passed away on March 1, 2010 at Wilson Regional Hospital, Johnson City, following an extended illness.
Joyce was born to Margaret (Niles) and James Smith on Dec. 18, 1929 in Oxford. She graduated from Afton Central School and married Glenn C. Swart of Afton. Joyce and Glenn were married for 62 years, and raised four children. Joyce was well known and loved in Afton. She worked at Stone’s Department Store and NBT in both the Afton and Bainbridge branch offices, and was a member of the Afton Methodist Church’s Circle 13 Club. Her friends and family will remember her most for her luscious baked goods and her hand knitted sweaters and afghans. Also remembered will be her love of the holidays, especially her beautiful Christmas trees and the Halloween costumes she made for her children every year. Joyce began collecting angels after the death of her daughter, Terri Lee, and is now one of them.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Glenn C. Swart of Afton; two children: G. Arthur Swart of Kirkwood and Christine Swart of Vestal; four grandchildren who adored their Mimi: Aaron Weeks (New River, Ariz.), Dondee Swart Maddox (Ohio), Kristin Swart (Rochester) and Kerri Swart (Binghamton); three great-grandsons: Julius, Chandler and Masen Weeks; sisters: Arlene (Maurice) Henry of Delhi, Pat (Ernie) Parizzi of Vienna, Va.A, Shirley Horrell of Sidney; brother, James (Jan) Smith of Vincent, Ala.
Joyce was predeceased by her daughter, Terri Lee on April 9, 1965, her son David Glenn on May 10, 1999, and her brother, Fred Smith, who passed away this past spring.
Friends are invited to call from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Joyce requested that donations be considered to either the American Heart Association at www.americanheart.org or to Traci’s Hope at P.O. Box 504 Apalachin, NY 13732. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family online at www.landersfh.com.
