Janice Stefhon


WEST LEYDEN – Janice M. (Barnes) Stefhon, a long time resident of Osceola Road, passed away on Dec. 27, at St. Luke’s Home in New Hartford, after a brief illness.
She was born in Greig, on Oct. 21, 1932, a daughter of Frank and Dorothy Jones Barnes. Janice grew up in Glenfield, where she attended school. Later they lived on the Hrim farm on the Hines Road, Town of Leyden, where her brother and sister operated a farm for several years.
On May 2, 1959, Janice was united in marriage with Ralph Stefhon, at the Boonville Methodist Church parsonage. In 1975, the couple along with her brother and sister, William, and Thelma all moved to her present home on the Osceola Road, near West Leyden.
Mrs. Stefhon was of the Methodist Faith. She enjoyed raising plants, playing pitch, crossword puzzles, the music of Johnny Cash, and entertaining family and friends at her home.
She is survived by four sons: William J. (Colleen) Stefhon, Ava, Douglas L., Croghan, Russell W., West Leyden, Ralph D. (Amy) Stefhon, Columbia, Md., three daughters; Linda (Douglas) Scales, Reading, KS., Sharon Harrington, Canastota, and Rhonda (Patrick) Dunn, Columbia, Md. She was predeceased by a son, James, who died as an infant, in 1964. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren, many close friends, neighbors, and one very close long time friend, Mary Lou Kozdra. She was predeceased by two brothers: Lee, and William Barnes, and by two sisters; Dorothy Evans who died as an infant, and Thelma Barnes.
Her funeral was held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, with the Rev. William A. Mudge, pastor of the Boonville United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Norwich. Calling hours at the funeral home were Sunday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association or Sunset Nursing Home Resident Activites Fund, 232 Academy St., Boonville, NY 13309.
