Virginia Mccumber


NORWICH – Virginia S. McCumber, 87, of West Main Street, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 7, 1922 in Norwich, Virginia was the daughter of Lee and Gladys (Reynolds) Stapleton. A Norwich resident for most of her life, she graduated from Norwich High School with the Class of 1941.  During World War II, Virginia worked at the Bendix Corporation in Sidney and later joined the staff at the Chenango County National Bank & Trust Company on North Broad Street which later became the Chase Lincoln First Bank.  She remained there for seventeen years.  She retired in 1983 from Procter & Gamble where she was an accounts receivable clerk.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Virginia is survived by her half-sister, Eileen Youngs, of Oxford; her niece, Jacqueline Kemp, of Florida and her very good friend, Rose Priest and her husband Roy, of Norwich. She was predeceased by two foster sisters, Leona Finnegan and Vivian Ross.
Funeral services for Virginia will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 4\at the Wilson Funeral Home. Rev. James Horton, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will take place in the spring in Sylvan Lawn Cemetery, Greene.
