Raelene Hoke


NORWICH – Raelene W. Hoke, 91 of Norwich, passed away at St. Luke’s Nursing Home, Utica on Oct. 12, 2006, following a severe fall at her summer home at Limekiln Lake, Inlet. 
She was born on Dec. 5, 1914 in the Town of Andes, the daughter of the late Solomon and Ruby (VanKleeck) Winner. On July 12, 1936 in Bainbridge she married Charles Atlee Hoke, who passed away on Dec. 9, 2004.
She is survived by her daughters; Mary Lou McAvoy of Norwich and Ruth Ann Hoke and her companion Lee Frey of Monticello; her brothers, Edwin Winner of Oxford and Harry Winner of Delanson; her grandchildren, Karen and Robert Crown of Newark Valley, Bruce and Kelly Wooley of Pittsfield, Mass., Kathy and Daniel Black of Norwich, and Bethany and Eugene Nichols of East Pharsalia; her great grandchildren, Cory Black, Katelyn Wooley, Megan McAvoy Nichols, Kayla Nichols, Kelsey Black and MacKenzie Nichols.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Rae graduated from Morris Central School with the Class of 1934.  She retired as the office manager from W. T. Grant’s in Norwich in 1975 after nearly 30 years of employment.  She lived in Norwich for many years, but enjoyed her summer home at Limekiln Lake in Inlet the most.  She was an avid bowler and golfer and was the second woman inducted into the Norwich Bowling Hall of Fame.  She was a member of the Women of the Moose in Sidney and the College of Regents and held the Star Recorder Degree.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sherburne and the Auxiliary of Christy Rock Post #189, American Legion.  She was a member of the Young at Heart Club and the Red Hat Society in Inlet.  She was also an avid bridge player.  She was the matriarch of her family and they always were the most important part of her life.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford. Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Inlet Fire Department, the First United Methodist Church, PO Box 556, Sherburne, NY 13460 or the American Legion Auxiliary, 29 Sheldon St, Norwich, NY 13815.
