Sergio A. Polanco


Sergio A. Polanco, 91, of Norwich passed away early Friday morning, November 2, 2018, at his winter home in Englewood, FL.
Sergio was born on November 23, 1926 in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic the son of John and Isabelle (Breton) Polanco. He attended school in the Dominican Republic before coming to the United States as a young adult in 1948. Once in the United States he attended St. John’s University in New York City where he earned his degree in Medical Technology. With medicine as his passion and life, Sergio had been employed at NY University Hospital, Mt. Siani Hospital and Margaretville Hospital. In 1979 he came to Norwich where he gained employment with Chenango Memorial Hospital where he worked as Lab Manager until his retirement in 1988. Since 2010 he and his wife Esta have wintered in Englewood, FL.
Sergio was a man who was full of life. He was witty man and you never knew what was going to come out of his mouth. He enjoyed people In general and loved to see everyone smile and laugh. A veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War he had served in the 101st Signal Battalion.
On March 24, 1990 he married Esta Silvernail who survives. Besides his wife Esta of Norwich he is survived by his daughters; Barbara Spickard and husband Larry of Charlotte, NC, Ann Marie Polanco-Harper and husband Charles Harper of Lacey, WA, grandchildren; Daniel (Lauren) Rowe, Scott Rowe, Sally and Blake Spickard, Victoria and Alexander Harper along with great grandsons Oliver and Maxwell Rowe. Also surviving are his sisters Elvira, Estella, Violet, brother Socrates and wife Myriam along with many nieces, nephews and “my son Casper the friendly ghost.”
Sergio was predeceased by his siblings Lucy, Josephine, Gloria, Nidia and Rubin.
A funeral service for Sergio will be held on Sunday, November 18, at 2pm from the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Rachel Morse, Pastor of the Broad St. United Methodist Church of Norwich will officiate. Interment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Sunday from 12 Noon until the time of the service at 2pm.
